Verdi Soloist Profile: James Harrington

We are looking forward to having James Harrington perform with us at Jordan Hall on November 11 for our performance of Verdi’s Requiem.

Praised by Broadway World as a “compelling actor” with a “rich and powerful bass voice”, James Harrington begins the 2018-19 season with his role debut as Colline in La bohème with Pacific Northwest Opera, before debuting as the bass soloist in the Verdi Requiem with the Commonwealth Chorale and Metropolitan Chorale at Jordan Hall in Boston. Later in the season, he reprises Colline at Barn Opera in Vermont, returning to Boston for Alcindoro in La bohème with Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, and making his Gulfshore Opera debut as Dottore Grenvil in La Traviata.

In 2017-18, he debuted as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte with Opera in the Heights, Orbazzano in Rossini’s Tancredi rifatto with Teatro Nuovo, Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Summer Garden Opera, and Dottore Grenvil in La traviata at St. Petersburg Opera. The previous season saw his return to Santa Fe Opera to cover Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor and his Portland Opera debut in Monteverdi’s Songs of Love and War, a staged production of beloved Monteverdi madrigals.

As an Apprentice Singer at Santa Fe Opera in 2016, he made his main stage debuts as Billy Jackrabbit in La fanciulla del West and Diener 4 in Capriccio. Earlier that season, he sang Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard at Winter Opera St. Louis, and returned to Florida State University to perform Seneca in L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Adam in Haydn’s The Creation, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bass Soloist in Schubert’s Mass in E-flat Major.

He has previously appeared as Lodovico in Otello, Marquis in La traviata, and Fouquier Tinville in Andrea Chénier (Nashville Opera); Jigger Craigin in Carousel and Pedro in Man of La Mancha (Utah Festival); Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress and Commendatore in Don Giovanni (Florida State University); J.P.
