Four Funerals and a Wedding
Saturday, November 16, 2024 @ 7:30 pm • First Church in Cambridge
The music of mourning is both touching and personal. The universal experience of loss resonates deeply in the four works by English composers, each with a particular association. We conclude with Pinkham’s Wedding Cantata to celebrate this joyful rite of passage.
Henry Purcell: Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary
Performed at the funeral of Queen Mary II in March of 1695 in Westminster Abbey.
Herbert Howells: Take Him Earth, For Cherishing
Commissioned for John F. Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963.
John Tavener: Song for Athene
Most widely known for its performance at Westminster Abbey at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.
Howard Goodall: Lacrymosa: Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep from Eternal Light: A Requiem
Premiered in 2008, Goodall departs from the traditional Latin text to offer a comforting and solace for the bereaved.
Daniel Pinkham : Wedding Cantata
Celebrated New England composer Daniel Pinkham set text from the Song of Songs with both tenderness and charm.
