The Creative Impulse – March 2019

Welcome to The Creative Impulse!

The title of our program comes from the recognition that in times of social unrest, under circumstances when people are oppressed or faced with injustice, creative responses so often blossom amid the struggles. There is something innate and deeply rooted in the human psyche that reveals a need to express oneself in song, dance, and the visual arts to capture a zeitgeist that words alone may not capture. Group singing in particular is central to rituals that bind us and locate us within long-standing traditions—whether it is singing at a sport event or at a protest rally. What power does singing hold, that it should time and time again be used to galvanize us, unite us, and even succeed in toppling tyrannical regimes? We explore this theme today.
